The two men who robbed a local bank and then repeatedly shot at law enforcement, injuring a trooper and a police chief, have pled not guilty.

William Clayton, 19, of Osage, appeared at the Bremer County Courtroom Monday morning for the arraignment.

The other suspect, Jeremiah Mumford, 24, of New Hampton, entered a not guilty plea in writing.

Escorted by two sheriff's deputies, Clayton had a brief conference with his attorney, Erin Bolinger, of the Public Defender's Office, before heading into the courtroom.

Clayton and Mumford face 35 charges in Bremer County alone, stemming from their failed attempt to escape law enforcement after robbing the Maynard Savings Bank on Oct. 30.

In the course of fleeing from the authorities, the two suspects shot their assault rifles repeatedly, injuring Trooper Mark Domino and Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain.

The prosecutor has indicated he plans to try the pair together. They are each charged with eight counts of attempted murder; five counts of terrorism, six counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon; eight counts of assault on a peace officer with the intent to inflict serious injury; and eight counts of assault on a peace officer by use or display of a dangerous weapon.

Attempt to commit murder, terrorism, assault and intimidation charges are Class B felonies; and the intimidation charges are Class C felonies.

Judge Rustin Davenport asked the defense how her client intended to plead.

"At this time we would enter a plea of not guilty to all charges and we would waive the speedy trial on all charges," Bolinger said.

The judge set Jan. 7 at 10 30 a.m. for pretrial and Jan. 23 as a date for trial.
